April 2019 Travel Update: In the last few years, our family moved from Southern California to Arizona which made driving to Baja California a lot more challenging. In our recent trip to Baja, we drove from Phoenix, Arizona to San Diego California where used the Cross Border Express. This pedestrian bridge took us directly to the Tijuana International Airport where we took a flight to Loreto via Calafia Airlines. The flight was about 1 hour and 20 minutes long each way. The whole process was easy and we didn't run into any issues . We hope this information can be of help. Happy Travels.
On a more personal note, our latest family trip started December 26th, 2012 and with much dismay on our part ended on January 4th, 2013, it just didn't seem long enough! With that said, we can't wait to go back to Baja for our next trip that we immediately started planning as soon as we set foot in California. Here's a short rundown of our trip.
We headed to the Tijuana border about midday and went to a drive through currency exchange booth to have some pesos handy for the toll stops along the way (4 of those). We were expecting to wait several hours in line to get through the border, but much to our surprise and delight there were no long lines so we were able to get through in minutes. The drive through Tijuana, Ensenada and through all 4 toll stops was uneventful. There were the usual Federal check points that we had to go through but those are a breeze as long as you don't have anything illegal in your possession. I should really mention the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean along the way, but as Tia Terry exclaimed numerous times with vehemence, "Wait till we get to see the Sea of Cortez, , Oh the view! even the cacti there are much bigger and better looking!". Enough said!
To break up the drive we stopped in El Rosario to have dinner at Mama Espinoza's. The fish tacos were delicious and Scott had an order of flan for desert plus a decent portion of our order of flan. We spent the night at the Baja Cactus Motel, had an early start the following day and made it to Loreto at 1:30 pm. Tia Terry and Tia Eva completely spoiled us rotten during this trip, we can't say enough about their cooking and we definitely can't give it justice by just talking about it here. You can check out all the fun we had during our trip in our Facebook page.
Before we knew it, it was time to go back to California! When we tried to mention going back 1 day early, we swear, Tia Terry gave us "the look", so we stayed another day and started our drive back at 9:00 am on the 4th of January. The drive back up was just as uneventful as the drive down and we made it back to the U.S. border by 9:45 pm and made it through in an hour.
Not once during this entire trip or any of the previous trips we've taken in the last 8 years did we come across any cartel related issues, activities or signs. To put this trip in perspective, it is a lot more daunting to drive to the Oakland International Airport vs. traveling to Baja California Sur.
